The best traffic available out of 4 possible types of traffic?

Everywhere you look on the internet you read the same explicit saying: traffic equals money. Oh, how right they are, indeed, traffic equals money wherever you are, in any branch of commerce, electronic or not.

This is true for regular offline stores too, if a store has a good traffic, the number of sales are bigger and the store grows.

But does the same rule apply to ecommerce websites? Well, yes and no and let me tell you why I say this.

In electronic environment, traffic may come from more sources, or from more source types, to be more exact and this difference of where the traffic comes from may lead to different results.

It is common knowledge that traffic equals money equation is not right only by itself. There is a small adaptation that I would like to make there, namely targeted traffic equals money. Big money! So, the more targeted the traffic is, the more sales you will have. It will not help you that much if you receive 10000 visitors per day, untargeted traffic, instead get 1000 visitors per day of focused, targeted traffic and things will go way better, you will see.

So, what this got to do with traffic sources? Well, it has. Let’s see first which are the traffic sources we speak about:
  • Search engines: here people reach your site after searching for a particular string, a keyword, a group of keywords, looking for a product or service.
  • Referrals: if you have links on other websites, people will visit your site by clicking on those links. By the way, be sure you have as many links as possible on other relevant websites.
  • Direct traffic: people visit you because they know you, because they have heard about you, this is the exact value of your visibility. People come to you not by a link, not by a search, but because they know you.
  • Email, RSS, other sources: well, this point here can be easily split into many more points and discussed separately and I think I will discuss it in a future article since there are so many to say about this.
Now, from those traffic sources, the most efficient is the first one and the reason for which this happens is that when somebody enters your site by searching something on Google, for example, that means that your visitor is already looking for something and your site comes as an answer to his searches so there is a high probability that the visitor turns into a customer because on your website he finds the answer to his questions. Well, this is true if he really finds an answer to his questions; otherwise he will leave and go to your next competitor on the result page in Google.

That is the best traffic available because if you manage to get ranked well, you get free traffic for a long time with the best results; unfortunately it is not that easy to get ranked well for your specific keywords. I would love to get ranked well for Zen Cart templates and be on the first position, you know, then I would get a steady traffic from this criteria and people will actually buy more Zen Cart templates because I would answer their searches, it is that simple…
