Some time ago somebody asked me why are osCommerce templates so popular. Well, I think he missed the main point. It is this e-commerce package which is popular, and then the themes and skins. It is like with MySpace layouts and MySpace, right? If you think about it, it is the same as with any other popular software.
But the real question is why osCommerce is so popular? What makes it so desired and downloaded? Well, the main reason is that usually, e-commerce software is not cheap and not everybody has the money to spend on purchasing expensive software. But if it would come free? Is there anything like it? Well, it is, osCommerce is the name!
The first and obvious reason behind osCommerce popularity is the price, allowing people to start e-commerce sites without spending a dime on the software. This is a great thing if you think about it, you save from the start a lot of money allowing you to spend more on promoting the site or on designing.
Another obvious reason is the fact that it is really good. Very versatile, it gives you the power to make your online store look and work like no other in this world.
Also the fact that it is popular works as a snowball, a lot of people started to develop gadgets for it, making it more and more powerful.
And if you consider the fact that a good osCommerce template makes it look like no other before it, then you can say you have a winner. Actually, you know, the most powerful online stores work on an e-commerce engine, there are only a few, maybe the largest ones, which work on a custom built e-commerce application.
Most of the sites you usually buy stuff from have behind a standard engine for which the owners of the store paid good money. So, if you get the same for free, with the same power, why wouldn’t you go for it?
Actually, an open source engine that managed to resist on the market and has a lot of users has another obvious advantage: it is heavily tested! And I think nobody can deny that! Can you?
