Ecommerce templates, or the value of somebody else's work

One of the things my customers ask is can you build an online store for me from scratch? Well, I am a good programmer, in my opinion, and I can do it, if I really put my mind to it. The only thing I ask is why would I do such thing? There are so many software packages out there that power e-commerce website, why would I build one from scratch?
The advantage of buying pre-defined e-commerce software (or using a free one) is the fact that it has been tested before and probably all the major bugs have been fixed so you get a software engine that is bug free and in most of the cases is cheaper than building one from scratch, because the value of the work you put into this is small: you already have it, right, just need to configure it.
I can tell you that these last days I have put up such an ecommerce web site for one of my customers and I can appreciate the value of the work…somebody else did! Right, this is exactly what all is about: somebody else did all the work, we just needed to buy the package for about 6 times less than I would have charged for it and probably the price would have included some bugs too.
Another advantage that you may think of is the fact that you probably find so many beautiful ecommerce templates for your engine, some of them free, so you can dress up your store in minutes and make it look fine and sharp! That’s the value of somebody else’s work, again! So, I am not lazy, and I don’t say that I think of my customer’s money all the time, I mean saving him money, but I also think that I save time and deliver a good job to my customer. It is that simple!
Think about developing a custom shop from scratch. Every feature that the customer would have requested would have taken me hours or maybe even days of hard work to implement while this software has about 30-40 features there that I couldn’t even think of in the beginning.
How about osCommerce templates? Is it the same?
Take for example osCommerce shops. Did you see the variety of things they offer? Think about how much it would take somebody to develop osCommerce from scratch. Long time, in my opinion… You know what? This is the same with osCommerce templates! Really! Isn’t that great? A designer would have proposed you 1, 2, maybe 3 variations of a theme, and then you should have made up your mind about it and pick one in order for him to finish it! This way you have access to, remember my words, somebody else’s work! And this, my friends, saves YOU time, money and work!
